Fairfield Hills Complex

The Fairfield Hills Complex is one of the most recognizable places in Newtown. Originally opened in 1931 as Fairfield State Hospital and later renamed Fairfield Hills Hospital, the campus served patients from across Connecticut until its closure in 1995. The property was subsequently acquired by the Town of Newtown and has gradually evolved into a community destination that includes walking trails, recreational facilities, community events, open space, municipal offices, and local businesses.

Today, Fairfield Hills is a place where community life intersects with everyday life. Residents visit for recreation, town services, youth programs, senior activities, local events, outdoor exercise, and community gatherings. While the campus continues to evolve, it remains one of Newtown’s most unique and recognizable properties and offers newcomers a glimpse into how people connect, participate, and engage in everyday life in Newtown.

A Community Gathering Place

One of the things that makes Fairfield Hills unique is that no two people use the campus in exactly the same way. A child may be attending a program at the Community Center, a teenager may be participating in activities through Newtown Youth and Family Services, an adult may be visiting a town office, and a senior may be attending a program at the Senior Center. Others may meet friends at NewSylum Brewing Company or simply enjoying a walk through the grounds.

Unlike many parks or recreational facilities that serve a single purpose, Fairfield Hills brings together recreation, community services, local government, events, businesses, and open space in one location. As a result, people often find themselves visiting the campus for completely different reasons throughout the year.

As a result, Fairfield Hills is often one of the first places newcomers become familiar with after moving to Newtown, simply because so much of local life passes through the campus..

A Place in Transition

Since acquiring the property from the State of Connecticut, Newtown has been working to transform Fairfield Hills from a former psychiatric hospital campus into a community hub. While Fairfield Hills remains closely connected to its history, the campus continues to evolve as buildings are repurposed, new facilities are constructed, and future uses are explored.

Several of the original buildings have found new purposes. The Municipal Center occupies a repurposed hospital building, while NewSylum Brewing Company has brought new life to another portion of the campus. At the same time, Newtown Youth Academy (NYA) and the Community Center/Senior Center building represent entirely new additions to the property.

The town continues to explore potential uses for some of the remaining buildings, and that process will likely continue for many years. As a result, Fairfield Hills remains one of the few places in Newtown where residents can see the community’s past, present, and future side by side.

Fairfield Hills continues to evolve as Newtown considers new uses for the campus. It is not simply a historic site or recreation area, but a place where Newtown continues to shape its future while preserving an important part of its past.

Recreation at Fairfield Hills

For many residents, Fairfield Hills is a place to get outside and stay active. Throughout the year, people visit the campus to walk their dogs, jog, ride bicycles, exercise, participate in programs, or simply enjoy the open space.

Paved walking paths wind through portions of the property, making the campus a popular destination for walkers, runners, cyclists, and casual strolls. Along the way, visitors pass open fields, gardens, and the Newtown Fruit Trail, an edible walking trail featuring fruit trees, berry bushes, medicinal plants, and a memorial peach orchard dedicated to the victims of Sandy Hook. Open space throughout the campus provides opportunities for recreation, outdoor activities, and community events throughout the year.

The Newtown Community Center adds indoor recreation to the campus, with fitness facilities, aquatics, youth programs, and activities for residents of all ages that complement the outdoor amenities.

Whether someone prefers a walk outdoors, a workout at the Community Center, a bike ride, or an organized program, Fairfield Hills offers options that appeal to a wide range of ages, interests, and activity levels.

Fairfield Hills is home to many of the events that residents look forward to throughout the year. Depending on the season, the campus may be hosting an arts festival, farmers market, charity walk, road race, fundraiser, or another community gathering.

The annual Newtown Arts Festival is one of the campus’s signature events, bringing artists, performers, vendors, and visitors together each September. During the summer months, the Newtown Farmers Market offers organic produce and products from local vendors while giving residents another reason to spend time on the Fairfield Hills grounds.

Over the years, Fairfield Hills has hosted food truck events, outdoor movies, temporary ice skating, Easter egg hunts, races, walks, fundraisers, and seasonal celebrations. The campus is also home to organized sports, including soccer and baseball, and it’s not unusual to see members of the Newtown High School track team running through the property. These activities add another dimension to Fairfield Hills and give residents different reasons to visit throughout the year.

Fairfield Hills has evolved into a central gathering place for Newtown residents. Rather than being devoted to a single use, the campus brings together town government, recreation, community programs, businesses, events, and open space in one location.

That mix gives residents many reasons to use the campus throughout the year. Someone may come for a meeting at the Municipal Center, a program at the Community Center or Senior Center, a walk with friends, an event, or simply to spend time outdoors. The individual reasons for visiting may be different, but the larger purpose is the same: Fairfield Hills provides a place for the Newtown community to come together.
